Mexico is America’s neighbor to the south, has an estimated population of 111 million people, and is the fifth-largest country in the Americas by total area. The 1994 Mexican economic crisis (caused by the sudden devaluation of the Mexican peso) prompted a focus on improved efficiency in the country’s macroeconomic policies. This provoked extensive social, economic, and technological growth in the 1990s, and ultimately resulted in Mexico’s current status as one of the world’s largest economies and, perhaps more importantly, one of the world’s fastest growing economies, with a stable growth rate of 7.6%. Recent administrations have made upgrading Mexico’s infrastructure a priority, demonstrated by an emphasis on increased competition in ports, railroads, telecommunications, utility distribution, and airports.
